Natural Body Cleansing: Do Juice Fasts Really Work?

Author: Martha Gesegnet

People may choose to do a detox cleanse or juice fast for many different reasons.  There can be some benefits to consuming only fresh juice for anywhere from one to three days, but I believe any longer than that can be detrimental  to our bodies, Especially since there are better ways to cleanse the body of unwanted toxins.

In Ayurveda, it is recommended to do seasonal cleansing to remove accumulated toxins (ama) and to restore harmony and balance to the mind and emotions.  Fresh juices are certainly a part of this, but depending on your constitution a strict juice fast can actually do more harm than good.

It can be very beneficial to start each morning of a cleanse with a glass of fresh juice to begin cleansing and flushing the liver, kidneys, and digestion.  However, relying on only juice to nourish the body doesn't give much support to the energy that is need to detox the body.  Ayurveda recommends supporting your cleansing needs with a simple sop called Kitchari.  I t is made with lentils and rice and is easily digesteed  for complete nutrtion. This provides support to the body and keeps the digestive fire burning, allowing for the juices to help cleanse the other parts of the body.

Another consideration is that many times people go on a juice fast and drink too many juices that are made from fruits and vegetables like carrots, apples, and beets, which are highly concemtrated in sugars.  even though they are natural sugars they can cause an increase of "unfriendly" bacteria in the intestines....leading to an out break of candidiasis.  Often this leads to flu like symptoms and headaches  around the third to fifth days of a juice fast.  Many people think this is a "die off" of toxins but it is just the opposite.

All in all, a sensible cleanse is most effective when the body is supported by fresh juices that include lots of greens which are high in chlorophyll, a natural blood purifier.  But a juice fast all by itself isn't effective at removing accumulated toxins from deep within the tissues where they are stored.  A full body cleansing program is needed in order to do this effectively.
